Glenview News

Starting February 23, all 3rd-8th students in EMSD37 will be taking the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) online test.  This is a test that is required by the state of Illinois for all students.  This is the first year for the PARCC test in Illinois.

All students in grades 3rd-8th will take a computer-based PBA (performance based assessment) in both English/Language Arts and Mathematics.  These assessments are fully aligned to the K-12 Illinois Learning Standards.  These standards emphasize academic rigor, critical thinking, problem solving, and college and career readiness for all students.  If you would like to see samples of the types of questions on PARCC, please visit PARCC .

The testing window for this session of PARCC is February 23-March 20.  Students will take 3 tests in English/Language Arts and 2 tests in Mathematics.  The estimated time for each test is 50 minutes. Schedules have been created that will allow students adequate time to take tests.

The PBA is one part of the PARCC assessment.  In late April/early May, the state of Illinois requires all students to take the EOY (end of year) PARCC assessment.  The two tests, PBA and EOY, will be combined to create one summative score.  Since this is the first year for this test, the state will not be releasing student scores until the Fall of 2015.  We will make sure that all parents have student reports as soon as they are available.

As with any testing, it is important to encourage your child to do his/her best.  Classroom teachers will be administering tests so students will be in a comfortable environment.  Getting a good night's rest and eating a healthy breakfast are always good ideas every school day.  Remind your student that although these tests may be challenging, he/she will be prepared for the challenge.  Regular attendance and arriving to school on time will also help your child be ready for PARCC.

Health and Wellness

Hand washing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of infections. You can spread certain "germs" (a general term for microbes like viruses and bacteria) casually by touching another person. You can also catch germs when you touch contaminated objects or surfaces and then you touch your face (mouth, eyes, and nose).

"Good" hand washing techniques include using an adequate amount of soap, rubbing the hands together to create friction, and rinsing under running water.

Watch in this video as our nurse, Mrs. Jacobs, demonstrates the proper hand washing technique.
